The U-Pro Portable Breath Trainer is a resistance-based Inspiratory Muscle Trainer (IMT) — a compact, handheld device that adds controlled resistance to both your inhales and exhales. By breathing through the device, your diaphragm and respiratory muscles have to work harder, which progressively builds their strength — the same principle as lifting weights for your body.
It features adjustable resistance levels so you can start gentle and increase the challenge as your lungs get stronger. Use it for just 5–10 minutes a day to build real, measurable respiratory strength over time.
Best for: Athletes wanting more endurance, anyone building lung strength, post-illness recovery, singers, and people with mild respiratory conditions.
The U-Pro Digital is a precision spirometer with an OLED display that measures your inspiratory and expiratory lung volume in real time — in millilitres. It gives you the data to understand exactly how your lungs are performing and track your progress over time.
Unlike basic breath trainers that give you no feedback, the U-Pro Digital shows your actual lung volume on screen the moment you breathe into it. It's Bluetooth-enabled with a 280mAh rechargeable battery, and features 3 adjustable resistance levels so it functions as a trainer as well as a measurement device.
Best for: Biohackers, data-driven athletes, post-surgery patients tracking recovery, and anyone who wants to see the numbers improve.
Both devices train your lungs using resistance-based breathing — but they serve different needs:
- U-Pro Portable: Resistance training only — no display. Compact, simple, colour LED progress indicator. Best for people who want to build lung strength without tracking exact numbers.
- U-Pro Digital: Resistance training + real-time measurement. OLED display shows inspiratory and expiratory volume in mL. Bluetooth-enabled. 280mAh rechargeable battery. Best for people who want data to track and prove progress.
Not sure which is right for you? If you're an athlete or someone focused on measurable outcomes, go Digital. If you want a simple, effective daily trainer, the Portable is your pick.
The Prolungs Breathing App is available on iOS and Android at app.prolungs.com. It offers 50+ guided breathing sessions designed to improve respiratory endurance, reduce stress, and build breath control — structured around science, not guesswork.
Key features include:
- BPM control from 3–12 breaths per minute
- Visual animated breathing orb for biofeedback
- Breath-hold timing measurement
- Deep Relaxation mode for stress and anxiety
- Session progress tracking over time
You can use the app as a standalone breathing coach, or pair it alongside the physical Breath Trainer for a complete lung training system.
The Prolungs Respiratory & Lung Health Drops are a liquid botanical supplement formulated to support respiratory health from the inside. Made with Mullein Leaf and other carefully selected botanicals, they're designed to complement your breathing practice.
Add a few drops to the Breath Trainer before your session — the cooling botanicals enhance the experience while you train. They can also be taken independently as a daily respiratory support supplement.
The Perfect Duo is our bundled package combining the U-Pro Breath Trainer with the Prolungs Respiratory Health Drops. It's the complete inside-and-outside approach to respiratory strength — train your muscles with the device, support your lung tissue with the supplement. Together, they're more powerful than either alone.
We recommend 5–10 minutes daily for best results. Consistency beats intensity — 5 focused minutes every day will outperform 30 minutes once a week. Like any form of muscle training, frequency and progressive overload are key.
Start at a resistance level that challenges you without straining. Increase resistance as your muscles adapt — usually every 1–2 weeks when starting out. Most users feel a noticeable difference in their breathing within 2–3 weeks of consistent daily use.
Results vary by person, but here's what most users report with consistent daily use:
- Week 1–2: Increased awareness of breathing muscles. Sessions feel slightly easier by end of week 2.
- Week 3–4: Noticeable improvement in breath control. Athletes often report better pacing and reduced breathlessness during exercise.
- Week 6–8: Measurable changes in lung volume (trackable with the U-Pro Digital). Significant endurance improvements for athletes.
Clinical research on inspiratory muscle training (IMT) shows significant improvements in maximal inspiratory pressure typically within 4–8 weeks of consistent training. The key word is consistent — results compound over time.
Inspiratory muscle training has been studied extensively in people with COPD and is a recognised component of pulmonary rehabilitation programmes. However, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor or respiratory specialist before starting any new breathing exercise programme if you have a diagnosed respiratory condition, heart condition, or are recovering from surgery.
Our devices are consumer wellness products, not medical devices. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If your healthcare provider gives the green light, many of our users with mild-to-moderate respiratory conditions find the devices helpful for maintaining and building respiratory strength under clinical guidance.
Our products are designed for adults aged 16 and over. They're used by a broad range of people — from competitive athletes in their 20s and 30s to active adults in their 60s and 70s focusing on healthy ageing and respiratory maintenance. Children under 16 should only use these products under direct parental and medical supervision.
Yes — and we recommend it. The app guides your breathing rhythm while the device builds the muscle strength. Use the app's guided sessions to set your pace and breath rate, then breathe through the Breath Trainer to add resistance. It's a highly effective combination that trains both the habit and the muscle simultaneously.
Many users do their morning breathing session with the app for relaxation/mindfulness and a separate short resistance training session with the device in the evening.
Keep your device clean with these simple steps:
- Rinse the mouthpiece with warm water after each use
- Wash the mouthpiece with mild soap weekly
- Do not submerge the main body of the U-Pro Digital in water (it contains electronics)
- Store in a dry place away from direct sunlight
- Do not share your mouthpiece with others
The Prolungs Drops can be added to the mouthpiece area before use for an enhanced training experience — rinse thoroughly after.
Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) is a form of exercise that specifically targets the muscles responsible for breathing — primarily the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. By adding resistance to the inhale (and in the case of our devices, the exhale too), you force these muscles to work harder, progressively building their strength.
The research is clear: multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses show IMT significantly improves maximal inspiratory pressure — a key measure of breathing muscle strength. Studies show improvements in dyspnoea (breathlessness), exercise capacity, and quality of life, particularly in people with COPD, post-COVID conditions, and healthy athletes.
For athletes specifically, research shows well-trained inspiratory muscles can improve endurance performance — helping you sustain pace longer before breathlessness becomes a limiting factor.
Yes — and the evidence is strong. A 2022 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found that breathwork was associated with significantly lower levels of stress across randomised controlled trials. Slow, diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system — your body's "rest and digest" mode — directly counteracting the stress response.
Research shows that slow, nasal, diaphragmatic breathing improves vagal tone, heart rate variability, and emotional control while measurably reducing cortisol (your primary stress hormone). The Prolungs app's guided sessions are structured around these evidence-based breath patterns — typically 4–6 breaths per minute for maximum relaxation effect.
Lung capacity refers to the total volume of air your lungs can hold. Your total lung capacity (TLC) is largely determined by genetics and body size, and does not significantly change in healthy adults. However, what you can meaningfully improve is:
- Respiratory muscle strength: A stronger diaphragm and intercostal muscles allow you to breathe more efficiently and powerfully
- Functional lung performance: How much of your lung capacity you actually use during exercise
- Breathing efficiency: Getting more oxygen per breath, reducing the effort of breathing at rest and during activity
- Breath control: Your ability to regulate breathing rate, depth, and rhythm under pressure
These are the metrics that actually limit athletic performance and everyday respiratory comfort — and all of them are trainable.
